La leggenda narra che l'idea di costruire Disneyland venne al geniale creativo americano mentre stava visitando il Griffith Park con le figlie, le due bambine si divertivano sulla giostra mentre lui molto probabilmente si annoiava a morte, pensò così di creare un parco dove bambini e adulti potessero divertirsi insieme.

Il parcò aprì il 17 luglio 1955, con una giornata teoricamente riservata alla stampa e a uno stretto numero di invitati, in realtà 28.000 persone riuscirono a entrare usando biglietti falsi oppure scavalcando la recinzione. L'apertura ufficiale al pubblico avvenne il giorno seguente e i visitatori trovarono 20 attrazioni ad accoglierli.
