Il parco è stato inaugurato nel 2005, la proprietà è per il 53% del governo ma la Disney mantiene comunque il controllo e la gestione. Fin dalla fase di progettazione in parco è stato pensato per rispettare il più possibile la cultura cinese tanto che in molte attrazioni e nello sviluppo stesso della mappa si notano commistioni culturali che rendono Hong Kong Disneyland unico tra i parchi disney.
